Should Your Business Take a Stand on Controversial Issues?

Top View of a Forest Road Splitting into Two

In the world of small business, it can be difficult to avoid controversial or sensitive topics. You definitely don’t want to alienate consumers, but you may also have a specific ideal customer in mind for your brand. After watching companies like Patagonia successfully champion environmental causes, or witnessing the recent consumer boycotts surrounding brands like Target and Bud Light, the question remains: should your small business take a stand on social or political issues?

Today, we’re going to talk about the pros and cons.

The Pros

When it comes to taking a stand on a sensitive topic, there are definitely some pros that could help promote a small business. First, it shows your company’s conviction. Current customers and potential consumers can know that your small business has core values and that you stand by them. Whether they agree or not, many consumers appreciate a leader's decision to take a stand regardless.

Secondly, topical issues generate conversation. If we look at social media and the news, we see these issues being discussed in depth everywhere. When your business puts its name into the mix, it increases your chance of being seen and—more importantly—heard. Capitalizing on current events gives more visibility to your brand and can boost engagement simply because consumers are more aware of what your company stands for.

Finally, customers who do agree with your company’s stance will likely deepen their relationship with your business. Today, consumers are incredibly value-driven. Recent market research consistently shows that a vast majority of Gen Z and Millennial shoppers are more likely to support and buy from companies whose socio-political stances mirror their own. While your opinion may isolate some consumers, it can engage even more, building up fierce, long-lasting loyalty with the customers you are most interested in working with.

The Cons

Of course, with the positives come potential negatives. Because for every customer who agrees with your position, you run the risk of others strongly disagreeing with you, and therefore writing off the business altogether.

According to Entrepreneur, people don’t separate individuals from businesses. As a small-business owner, your thoughts and opinions are in the public sphere, and for every opinion you express, the business is automatically linked to it. And vice versa. If your small company takes a stand on an issue, your employees could be adversely affected because they are seen as part of the business, rather than simply connected to it.

In addition, the internet never forgets. If your small business shares an opinion now, chances are it will be brought up again... and again... and again. Once your stance is open to the public, it’s out there for good. This can have negative effects if, at some point in the future, your business tries to work with a new partner, hire a different employee, or get involved in something that contradicts your past statements. When it comes to the sphere of public opinion, consumers can be unforgiving and unforgetting.

Finally, your message may be misinterpreted or, worse, viewed as inauthentic. In today's cultural climate, consumers are quick to call out "performative activism"—when a brand speaks out on an issue for clout but doesn't back it up with internal policies or real action. Furthermore, without the benefit of tone and nonverbal cues online, a small stance can easily be blown out of proportion, making your position appear more radical than you ever intended.

When it comes to getting involved in current events, there are lots of pros and cons to consider for your small business. While taking a stand on an issue can have negative consequences, there are also deeply worthwhile positives. No matter what your business decides, ensure your choice aligns authentically with your core values, and think carefully before sending anything out—because chances are, you’ll never get it back.
